"Mario Party had been the only persistent minigame franchise for years, and Hudson got a little too comfortable because of it. The fact that there are more interesting minigame collections out there now, like Rayman Raving Rabbids, puts that laziness in stark relief and makes it more difficult to tolerate."
--Ryan Davis, GameSpot
"What Mario Party has always done better than its competition, though, is glue these minigames together with a structure that's easy to understand, straightforward to play, and competitive enough to provide enough stimulation for rewarding group play. That's no different here, and let's be honest, who looks to party games for stunning originality, cutting-edge presentation, and engrossing single-player modes? It's Mario. He parties. So will you."
--Mike Smith, Yahoo Games
"The end result is a title that feels like a rushed GameCube project with last-minute Wii controls. If you're playing with your kids you might still have fun in spite of these inadequacies, but most will be bored by the tedious flow of the boards and the mediocrity of the minis."
--Matt Casamassina, IGN
"Released on almost a yearly basis, the Mario Party games have seen little innovation until now. Utilizing the Wii’s motion-sensing remotes in exciting ways, Mario Party 8 is a breath of fresh air to a highly milked franchise and a game anyone can have fun playing."
--Craig Majaski, Gaming Age
"Watching us play Mario Party 8, you'd think we've given up on videogames -- and life -- altogether. Gone are the festive play sessions with the laughs and screams, replaced by a general unspoken apathy. That's what eight very similar games will do to a series."
--Dan Hsu, 1up
